Why do we have hair anyway?

Why do we have hair? Sounds a simple question, but this dead material which sprouts out of the top of our heads holds more fascination to us than how our hearts work or even how our brains work! There is no definitive answer but there are very solid theories as to why we have it and why we lost it; When we were primates we did not have language and so needed a way in communicating with each other, hair along with facial expressions and gestures made up a primitive sign language which we can still see (and feel) when cats and dogs become aggressive they show their hackles (a ridge of hair which runs down their spine)  today, goose bumps are the remnants of that indicator, everyone must have said at some point that the hairs have gone up at the back of their neck! Protection must have been the initial reason though…protection from the cold and from U.V light. So why did we lose it?…we are called the hairless ape, if it was so important to keep warm why loose most of our fur coat? Scientists believe now that it was down to the way we hunted (rather than the story of humans inventing clothes and so loosing hair after that). We are not the fastest of hunters, but we can travel great distances because of 2 things, our up-right stance and our cooling system. We have specially adapted sweat glands called ‘eccrine’ glands which allow us to sweat whilst running, walking (doing any strenuous thing really), apart from horses (who can sweat allot whilst they run)...

So why are you reading this? Is it because you have a hair or scalp problem? …Probably but did you set out looking for a Trichologist?..probably not! At present Trichology is a little known specialism, which is a shame because we are very helpful people! Firstly though a word on the ‘qualified’ bit of the Qualified trichologists; I studied at the Institute of Trichologists*, the oldest, largest and the Original of the Trichology seats of learning. But many Trichologists did not and those I cannot vouch for.  Regarding other organisations all I can say is in my experience this institute provides the best education and has produced the most eminent scientists in this field, always check the organisation the person is affiliated to… (Letters after a name have been known to be given out after a weekend course on how to retail certain hair products!!) So you have found a qualified and respectable trichologist (…ahem!) now all you need to know is what we do and what we can do to help your problem…well… a Trichologist has is a deep scientific understanding on how hair works and the mechanism between what is happening in your body and why the hair is falling out. You have probably tried talking to your GP about your hair thinning/falling out and may have come out feeling as though you have just wasted the Doctors time or that you should have not bothered them for such a trivial matter! This is a common outlook by the majority of the medical profession (not all I hasten to add, but unfortunately most!)…this attitude coupled by the...

Welcome to the Hairmedic Blog

This is my first ever blog and I don’t know how long I should blog for so…anyway…welcome to my thoughts on all matters on hair and hair ‘stuff’. This website has been designed with the sole purpose of getting the right amount of information to you regarding hair loss and scalp problems, and I say the ‘right amount’ for a very good reason! Unfortunately if your reading this, it is very likely you have some sort of hair loss problem and the internet is awash with ‘advice’ for such problems, which is why there is enough information here for you to realise if you have/have not got a problem (but not in a ultra-science baffling way..I hope!) But there are no tactics to ‘scare you into buying the miracle cure at the bottom of the page’ As you may have noticed I have no products to sell…and for a very good reason…many ‘off the shelf products don’t work! So here are my top tips for safe surfing for hair loss advice; Find somewhere qualified, go to the links page and look at www.Trichologists.org.uk for a list of qualified Trichologists. Avoid anywhere which promotes a ‘free consultation’…nothing in life is free; these folks are salesmen and probably not qualified to ‘consult’ in the first place. Don’t buy a hair loss product just because it says it works…just think about it; many types of hair loss problems are caused by underlying disorders, deficiencies or even certain medications…will the shampoo/product/pill which your about to spend a lot of money on correct your undiagnosed disorder which is causing the problem?…probably not…so it will...
